Architect turns Renton Housing Authority dumpster areas into community gathering spaces

March 26, 2010 – Seattle

Renton Housing Authority asked Bumgardner Architects to renovate its outdoor recycling and waste areas at the Evergreen Terrace affordable housing complex. Bumgardner took advantage of the opportunity to create a prototypical barrier-free educational experience and community focal point that also serves as a covered recycling and waste disposal center. The shelters will be self-sustaining green-roofed structures that change with the seasons.

Upon reviewing preliminary design drawings, Ryan E. Mielcarek (PHRS – Facilities Management, Dept. of HUD) commented, “At the risk of sounding inarticulate, that is the coolest dumpster setup I have seen.” The first two prototypes should be built by early summer 2010.

Bumgardner is also working with RHA to redevelop its 40 acres of low density housing on the crest of Sunset Terrace overlooking Renton. Bumgardner created a Master Plan which envisions a public-private effort to build a pedestrian-oriented mixed-use neighborhood of high density and ground related housing opportunities; including vibrant neighborhood retail, a new library, and a safe new neighborhood park. The first phase, 112 units of affordable housing, is in concept design.
